The Mexico City region hosted the most famous Latin American game of the Crucifixion of Christ with spectators on Friday for the first time in two years, after the coronavirus epidemic forced it to play on television only in 2020 and 2021.

The elaborate Easter Church, with the details of the Passion of Christ, has been played in the eastern part of Iztapalapa since 1843, and in recent years has attracted a whole week of about two million spectators.

But viewers are shut down in 2020 and 2021 in the hope of preventing the spread of coronavirus.

Iztapalapa regional president Clara Brugada said on Friday that 1.8 million people had attended this year's relocation and that it "happened peacefully, without incident."

The detailed reconstruction was first performed in 1843 after an outbreak of cholera threatened the then rural village. All actors are traditionally required to be rural residents.

Iztapalapa was swallowed up long ago by the growth of Mexico City. Passion includes a large procession, a public re-enactment of the main characters, which concludes with a Good Friday crucifixion where ropes and a small edge are used to ensure the safety of the players.
