Police say three deputies of the sheriff were shot dead by a suspect during an altercation in central Kansas.
Three deputy sheriffs were injured in the shooting and the suspect was killed during a shootout in central Kansas on Thursday, authorities said.
Cowley County Sheriff David Falletti said deputies were responding to a suspicious car report from the U.S. 77 north of Winfield. While in contact with the vehicle, three deputies were shot dead, Falletti said.
A woman alone in the car was found dead at the scene, Falletti said.
The three deputies were transferred to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. The sheriff's office said on Friday afternoon the two deputies were in good condition and could be released soon. The third deputy was seriously injured but was expected to recover, the sheriff's office said.
Authorities did not release further information. Police said investigators were trying to determine what happened before the shooting.
